Plumbing, Drains & Grease Traps — Common Questions
What does this category actually cover?+
Plumbing, Drains and Grease Traps covers the below-floor and under-bench fittings that keep a commercial kitchen compliant and flowing. You will find floor waste arrestors, grease interceptors, urinal setups and associated drainage hardware. These are the unglamorous parts that councils inspect and insurers care about, so buying the right product from the start saves your team real headaches later.
What types of products are stocked in this range?+
The range includes square and round floor waste arrestors in multiple grate sizes and pipe outlet diameters, under-bench grease traps in several capacity sizes, wall-hung urinal units sold as complete kits, and supporting plumbing components. Heel-proof grate options are available for high-traffic areas where foot traffic crosses the drain. Brands stocked include Viking Plastics, Stoddart Plumbing, Big Dipper and IMC.
How do I choose between a floor waste arrestor and a full grease trap?+
A floor waste arrestor sits in the floor and catches solid debris before it enters the drain line. A grease trap intercepts fats, oils and grease from sink and equipment waste water before it reaches the sewer. Most commercial kitchens need both. Your local council or a licensed plumber will confirm which capacity and configuration your venue requires under its trade waste agreement.
What size grease trap does my kitchen need?+
Sizing depends on the volume of wastewater your kitchen generates, the number of covers you serve and your council's trade waste conditions. Viking Plastics Grease Raider units are available in a range of capacities to suit benchtop or under-sink installation. We recommend confirming the minimum capacity with your plumber or council trade waste officer before you order, as undersizing is a common compliance failure.
Do the urinal kits include everything needed for installation?+
The 3Monkeez wall-hung urinal units listed are sold as complete kits, meaning the fixings and associated components are included in the box. Your licensed plumber will still need to connect the unit to your existing supply and waste lines. Check the product listing for the specific kit contents, as what is included can vary between the different length configurations.
What pipe outlet sizes are available for floor wastes?+
Floor waste arrestors in this range are available to suit different pipe outlet diameters. The Scraptrap square arrestors, for example, are offered in versions that suit both 100 mm and 150 mm outlet pipes, so you can match the fitting to your existing drainage layout. Always confirm your existing pipe size before ordering to avoid a return.
Are heel-proof grates worth the extra consideration?+
Yes, particularly in any area where staff or customers walk across the drain. A heel-proof grate has a pattern that prevents stiletto heels or narrow footwear from catching in the openings. Many councils and workplace safety codes require heel-proof grates in public or staff-accessible areas. Several floor waste options in this range carry that designation, so check the product title if it is a requirement for your venue.
How do I clean and maintain a grease trap?+
Grease traps need to be pumped out and cleaned at regular intervals, with frequency depending on your kitchen's output. Viking Plastics Grease Raider units are designed for easy access and cleaning, which reduces the labour involved. Keep a maintenance log, as councils often require records of pump-out dates as part of your trade waste compliance. Neglecting a trap leads to odour, blockages and potential fines.
How do I keep floor wastes flowing in a busy kitchen?+
Lift and rinse the grate at the end of each service to clear food debris before it dries and hardens. The basket or body of the arrestor should be pulled and cleaned regularly, especially in kitchens producing high volumes of solid waste. A blocked floor waste backs up quickly during a busy service, so building the clean into your closing checklist is the simplest fix.
What does this range cost, and how does member pricing work?+
Prices vary across the 231 products depending on the type, size and brand. Members save off RRP across the full plumbing and drainage range, which adds up quickly when you are fitting out a new venue or replacing multiple units. Create a free Chefs Depot account before you add to cart to make sure your member price is applied at checkout.
